Bartlett Yancey
House |
According to the NC Department of Transportation, this byway begins in
Guilford County in Monticello, and continues on
N.C. 150
East
through Williamsburg and Locust Hill. About 1.5 miles past Locust
Hill, turn right onto U.S. 158 and continue
for about five miles until
it meets with the Yanceyville town limits. Established in 1791 as the
Caswell Court House, the name was changed in 1833
to honor then N.C. legislator Bartlett Yancey. In the town of Yanceyville,
turn right onto Main Street (S.R. 1163). Continue on Main Street until it
intersects with N.C. 62. Turn left onto N.C. 62 to continue on the byway.
While
traveling north on N.C. 62, look for many older houses and barns dating back
to the 1800s. About 6 miles up on N.C. 62, look for
the Yoder's Country Market sign on your left. Turn on Blanch Road and
Yoder's is one mile down, on your right.
After finishing your shopping experience at Yoder’s, get back on N.C.
62 to continue your tour of the byway,
turning right at the traffic light at N.C.
57. This will take you through the town of Milton -- drive slowly and
notice the architecture and buildings of the 19th century. Be sure to visit
Aunt Millie’s
for
lunch (home of the best pizza and banana splits
around) and then take a walking tour of downtown
Milton ("the museum without walls"). Browse the
antique shops and tour the
Thomas Day House
(Union Tavern).
Then finish your drive of the
Colonial Heritage Scenic Byway
by
following N.C. 57 south
towards Semora. Take N.C.
119 south at Semora before turning right again onto Stephentown Rd.
(SR 1564). Follow SR 1564 for 6 miles before turning right onto US 158.
After two miles, turn left onto N.C.
86 and travel south for about 24 miles and get a glimpse of Piedmont dairy
farms and rural life.
